A Hex Nipple has a hexagonal section in the middle for a wrench to grip. A Close Nipple has no unthreaded section in the middle, meaning the two threaded ends are almost touching. Hex nipples are strongly recommended for high-pressure applications as they allow for proper, high-torque installation without damaging the threads.
